Joe "Kid" Avery
Real name: Joseph Avery
b. Waggeman, La., Oct. 3, 1892.d. Waggeman, La., Dec. 9, 1955.
New Orleans trombone player. Played in the Tulane Orchestra 1915-1922. Toured with Evan Thomas' Black Eagles and the Yelping Hounds in Crowley, La. Led his own band up to his death, and was the regular trombone player in the Young Tuxedo Brass Band. Known for his use of the blues riff "Holler Blues", that became known widely, if inaccurately, as "Joe Avery's Tune" or "The Second Line" (not to be confused with the Paul Barbarin march of the same name).
