Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers

Effective period / Period of releases: 1968 - 1990

Members: Bobby Taylor, Robbie King, Thomas Chong, Duris Maxwell, Wes Henderson, Eddie Patterson, Mel Brown (2)

American & Canadian soul group recording for Motown in the late 1960's, based in Vancouver, Canada. Bobby Taylor met Little Daddie & The Bachelors in San Francisco in the early 1960's. In Vancouver the band, after several name changes, received their break as Bobby Taylor & the Vancouvers. Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson from Motown's The Supremes heard them singing in Vancouvers' Elegant Palace & notified Berry Gordy who brought them to Detroit to record. On Gordy Jrs' Gordy label they released one album, titled Bobby Taylor And The Vancouvers (1968), from which the single "Does Your Mama Know About Me," peaked at #29. For a July, 1968 show at the Regal Theater in Chicago, Bobby Taylor & the Vancouvers had a local family band, The Jackson 5, as their opening act. But their career never really took off, and the members went separate ways shortly after the album was released.

While recording at Motown Bobby Taylor handled the leads, while Tommy Chong and Wes Henderson played guitar. Eddie Patterson played bass and Ted Lewis sat behind the drums.
