The D'Oyly Carte Opera Company is a professional light opera company that staged Gilbert and Sullivan's Savoy operas nearly year-round in the UK and sometimes toured in Europe, North America and elsewhere, from the 1870's until 1982. The company was forced to close in 1982 due to mounting financial pressures. A new D'Oyly Carte Opera Company was formed in 1988 with a legacy left by Bridget D'Oyly Carte (granddaughter of the founder Richard D'Oyly Carte). The new company was forced to suspend productions in 2003 due to funding difficulties.
