Lost Penguin

Members: Matthew J Gilbert

With the Matthew !WOWOW! remix of debut single 'Mr Whippy' being championed in the summer of 2006 by London's XFM radio station DJ's John Hillcock and Jon Kennedy it was quickly recognised as one of the earliest releases by any of London's 'Nu Rave' scene band's.

That limited edition single single sold out 'on release' reflecting the impact of their appearances with 'Klaxons' and Canadian duo 'Crystal Castles' who shared stages with them on their first UK visit in summer 2006.

Active players in London's underground art scene, ('Kev Soar' aka 'The Greenwich Pirate' runs 'Toy Pirate' magazine), 'Lost Penguin' forged a close alliance with noted artist 'Danny Sangra', often collaborating and performing at his Exhibitions.

At a happening in 'Pineal Eye Gallery' in 2006 Sangra constructed a one-off costume for singer Kerry (aka 'Charleigh Blue'), the custom printed fabric for which later became incorporated in his painting 'Charleigh Blue' which was exhibited in his later show at Tescodisco gallery in February 2007. That fabric design also forms the basis of the 'Mr Whippy' artwork.

Not without controversy their confrontational performances often provoked angry responses. At a Hepatits C Awareness benefit, their opening slot for headlining electroclash outfit 'Client' prompted a furious backlash from Client fans on their web forum, delivering Lost Penguin the insult that became their slogan - 'talentless pricks'.

Follow-up single 'Pleasurewood Kills' rapidly attained status when both tracks were voted into John Peel's 'festive fifty' in February 2007. 'Lost Penguin' had matched 'Half Man Half Biscuit' and 'The Wedding Present' as the only other acts who could count two songs amongst the list of the twenty shortest songs ever to receive that accolade!

In October 2007 'Lost Penguin' played their 100th and final show at Catch22 in London, announcing 'we are splitting... whilst we are still friends'. Bassist 'Matt Gilbert' later joined live drummer 'Andrew Moran' and play live across Europe with 'The Violets', Kerry went on to collaborate with members of american electro act 'Dreamburger'. Kev Soar continues with his 'Toy Pirate' activities.
