In the summer of 1971 Drury College in Springfield, Missouri hosted a weeklong workshop with Stan Kenton which attracted 357 students from across the country. A concert was held after the workshop at the Drury Fieldhouse featuring music by 12 units and the Stan Kenton Orchestra.

The three hour concert started with the less "mature" bands, progressing to the number two-rated band, led by Ken Hanna, chief arranger for the Kenton Orchestra. The number one band was led by Leon Breeden from North Texas University. An improvisational band playing without music was under the direction of Dan Haerle, director of jazz studies at Monterey Peninsula College, Monterey, California. The final student band was a Neophonic Orchestra, directed by Bill Fritz, a Hollywood composer and arranger. The Kenton Orchestra closed the clinic with a 45 minute concert. The Jazz Clinic was directed by Matt Betton. - Springfield Leader and Press - June 17, 1971
