Started in Cape Town, South Africa by Patrick Lee-Thorp in 1980 as a production business, Mountain Records soon grew into a record company that produced mainly local (southern African) performers, particularly Cape Jazz. "Local is Lekker" was their motto. Local legend and folk singer/composer David Kramer was the first artist to release a full-length via the label.
The logo of the label depicts the iconic outline of Cape Town's Table Mountain. Distribution is handled by New Music Distribution.
