Europe evolved on the island of Crete. According to legend, the rulers of this civilization all bore the name of "Minos" and were considered as descendants of the first King Minos - the half divine son of Zeus and Europe. From about 2000 - 1400 B.C. the rulers called Minos reigned over an empire of unbelievably opulent splendor. The palace of Minos at Knossos consisted of several storeys containing more than 1000 rooms. So complex was the maze of corridors and underground passages that, centuries after the palace was destroyed, legend spoke of the Labyrinth of Knossos. Stories were told of a terrible monster, half man, half bull -The Minotaur- who dwelt in the depths of the labyrinth until he was slain by the legendary Prince Theseus of Athens. In addition to Knossos, there were other prosperous cities of Crete, each city ruled by its own king. These kings, who owned allegiance to Minos, lived in palaces hardly less magnificent than that of Minos himself."
