Organist Johnny Rodway, from Birmingham, and drummer Ken Leyland, from Bolton, had both been professional musicians since leaving school. They first met in the Billy Forrest Band at the Empress Ballroom, Wigan, in 1947. Before that Ken had played with Charlie Bassett at the Ritz in Manchester and Johnny had been in the RAF as a bomb-aimer. During his service career, he played in a camp band with bassist Johnny Hawksworth.
