Born in 1943 in Louisiana, his gospel background and early R&B experience with the Dothan Sextet put him alongside the very best stylists and, as many soul singers have often done, he reinterpreted Country & Western songs with skill and without compromise. Mighty Sam also recorded on Andee, Atlantic and Malaco and, it might well be remembered, had a whole album of his material issued on the UK Soul City label in the late 60s.
