White had performed at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival for nine years. She began singing as a 9-year-old, performing in her church choir.

In 1975, White became the featured artist with the Wallace Davenport Singers. She performed in five European tours and was particularly popular in Norway, where local papers called her the "queen of gospel."
