Born on 22 April 1963 in Assomada, in the municipality of Santa Catarina on the island of Santiago, Cabo Verde, he began his musical career actively taking part in avant-garde cultural movements such as GAMA 80, Djurba 79, Dilimundo, and “Grupo de Amigos de Música de Assomada”.

After moving to Europe, Papá de Betina traced his path between France and Portugal, mixing different styles and proving his talent also as a music producer. From vibrant sounds to soothing mornas, he sang of social injustice, emigration, independence, politics, and religion, with ever-present and deep awareness.

Papá de Betina passed away on 28 March 2022.
