American Doom Metal band. Formed: 1992 in Chicago, Illinois.
Disbanded: November 2009.

Influenced by artists such as Paradise Lost, Dead Can Dance and Cranes, Avernus' early releases were a mix of Death Metal, Doom Metal, and cinematic atmospheres. The band's sound quickly evolved to incorporate a sound closer to Goth Rock and managed to record semi-consistently despite an ever-fluctuating roster of musicians. Guitarist and vocalist Rick McCoy was the sole constant member throughout the band's existence.
