Real name: William Francis Ingogly
Effective period / Period of releases: 1952
Organist, pianist, and vocalist based in Rock Island, Illinois. Ingogly (1921-1972) was a step-grandson of Peter Licata, who had a music store at several locations in Rock Island, the last being at 7th Avenue and 15th Street. By age 19, Ingogly was the organist at Jones' Roller Rink, 435 12th Street, Rock Island, nightly from 7:30 to 10:30. After spending two years at Augustana College studying music theory, harmony, and counterpoint, he entered the Army, eventually becoming attached to the Coast Guard band in Texas. He played bassoon and glockenspiel in that capacity, also serving as a pianist while a chaplain's assistant. While making a final tour of the East Coast following his military service, he befriended The Four Freshmen, who favored one of his arrangements so much that they used it as a show closer for years. He was also known to have worked with The Newton Brothers, Martha Raye, and Spike Jones. From 1963 to 1970, Ingogly was Director of Music at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church and School in Rock Island, the site of his earliest musical training. By 1968, he was teaching piano and organ lessons at Bowlby Music House in Rock Island. Two months before his death from a heart attack just before his 52nd birthday, he was performing at The Flamingo in Carbon Cliff, Illinois.
