Zru Vogue is an American postpunk avant-pop band formed in 1980 in Palo Alto, California, when 3 friends from the San Francisco underground scene began experimenting with pop music by blending African tribal and Middle Eastern rhythms, ambient, and British-influenced avant-garde rock with dada sensibilities, minimal electronics, and funk-rock guitars. Their debut single Nakweda Dream was released by independent San Francisco label Adolescent Records in February 1981. It became a college radio success and received critical acclaim in the alternative press, including Sub-pop who named it the best independent single of 1981. In 1982 Zru Vogue became the duo of Andrew Jackson and Rick Cuevas, with various guest artists joining them. This duo recorded the untitled debut album. In 1985, the group took a break to focus on solo recordings. Zru Vogue resumed writing and recording as a duo in 2002 and since then has recorded and released many albums of new material. The current line-up includes Patrick Coyne on drums with Andrew Lawrence Jackson and Rick Cuevas on all other instruments and vocals.
