He trained at The Guildhall School Of Music & Drama. In 1999, he was Co-Principal Cello in the London Symphony Orchestra.
Married to Viktoria Mullova with whom they have one daughter,Nadia Mullova-Barley. He is the stepfather of Katia Mullova and Misha Mullov-Abbado.
