From early on he began attending traditional samba circles on the Saúde neighborhood, where he was born. He was one of the founding members of Escola de Samba Unidos da Saúde in the early 1930's. He also went to Escola de Samba Barão da Gamboa and later to Escola Recreio de Ramos.
