Formed in late 1978 at Wellington's Rongotai College. Original line-up was: Andrew Fagan (vocals), Gary Curtis (bass), Gordon Costello (guitar) and Chas Mannell (drums).The Ambitious Vegetables were part of the original Wellington punk scene playing alongside bands like The Wallsockets, Shoes This High and The Steroids.
In 1979 the band decided to strengthen their guitar sound with the inclusion of Peter Henderson who was a few years older than the rest of the group.
In late 1979, Fagan left for university to be replaced on vocals by Gordon Costello. Gary Curtis left soon after this, being replaced on bass by Gordon's brother Murray.
By the end of 1979 the band split. Henderson and the Costello Brothers formed The Red, while drummer, Chas, joined with Fagan and Curtis to form well-known Kiwi pop band, The Mockers.
