He was known to millions as both the "Voice" and the "Dean" of the Grand Ole Opry, he worked for WSM radio for nearly 50 years. He joined George D. Hay and the staff of Grand Ole Opry announcers in 1944, later becoming the Opry’s chief announcer for many years.
