Walter Benjamin
Real name: Walter Bendix Schönflies Benjamin
German-Jewish philosopher, sociologist, literary critic, translator and essayist, born 15 July 1892 in Berlin, Germany, died by suicide 27 September 1940 in Portbou, Spain. He was at times associated with the Frankfurt School of critical theory. His turn to Marxism in the 1930s was influenced by his friend Bertolt Brecht.
