RAI was formed at the end of the war to replace E.I.A.R. Four orchestras were established, with the others in Turin (Orchestra Sinfonica Di Torino), Rome (Orchestra Sinfonica Di Roma Della RAI), and, later, Naples (Orchestra "Alessandro Scarlatti" di Napoli Della RAI). EIAR, Italy's newly-born public radio authority, had founded its first symphony orchestra in Turin in 1931.

In 1994, the four orchestras were merged in Turin, under the name of the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale Della RAI
