Born in Cracow, Poland, he became famous as a bandleader, nightclub owner, composer and singer. When the Germans swept through his country in 1939 he was captured and imprisoned. He escaped to Russia where he continued his musical career. When Russia entered the war he joined the Polish army which led him to Britain where he settled.
