British chamber orchestra, founded in 1958 as "Northern Sinfonia" and initially based in Newcastle upon Tyne. Since 2004, it is resident at The Sage in Gateshead.In June 2013, Queen Elizabeth II bestowed the title 'Royal' on the orchestra, formally naming it the "Royal Northern Sinfonia".
