Boyce Brown

American jazz alto saxophonist and clarinetist, born April 16, 1910 in Chicago, Illinois, died January 30, 1959 in Hillsdale, near Rock Island, Illinois.
At age 17 played in Chicago in band led by drummer Don Carter. Worked in New York in the early 1930s with alto saxophonist Benny Meroff, returned to Chicago to join Wingy Manone 1933, played and recorded with Friar's Society Orchestra 1934-1935. Then led own small group until mid-1940s. In 1953 entered a monastery and adopted the name Brother Matthew. Returned briefly to jazz, recording with Eddie Condon in 1956.
