James debuted as a bassist in KPOP group Royal Pirates in 2011. On June 10th, 2015, Two years after joining Royal Pirates, Lee suffered a life-changing accident that severed his hand. The incident took nearly five surgeries to repair and also ended his career as a bassist. Two years later, he discovered a blood clot in his brain, which caused him to leave Royal Pirates and return home to Los Angeles, California in order to recover mentally and physically.

After James moved back to Los Angeles and decided to release music written post accident in projects supported by his fans nicknamed Wolfgang the first was called ’the Light EP’. The EP also features Amber Liu and Sooyoung. Topping the charts internationally, 'The Light EP' hit top 10 in several countries as well as #1 in the Philippines & #2 in Singapore on iTunes. Funding a successful kickstarter campaign has been fundamental to rehabilitation and restarting his hopes as a musician. He is currently writing and producing for artists in Asia. He has had several number 1 hits in China in recent years with songs for stars such as Jason Zhang and Angelababy.

After several years, James made a return to the Asian entertainment industry, with a focus on China. In 2021, he made appearances on several Chinese reality TV shows and, in 2022, starred in a TV drama, albeit in a support role.
