Mantra

Effective period / Period of releases: 1981

Members: David Webber, Bobby Lovelace, Roger Harris (4), Kenny Burch, Eric Alexander (8)

US boogie/funk/soul septet from Orlando, Florida. The group started around 1976 and was found by guitarist Paul Drennan, the only original bandmember after a few groupchanges of Mantra. The core of the Mantra line-up: Paul Drennan (guitar, vocals), Kenny Burch (keyboards, vocals), Henry Cleveland (trombone, vocals) and David Webber (trumpet, vocals). Lead singer Roger Harris, bassist Eric Alexander and drummer Bobby Lovelace (all from the Atlanta area) were added to the group after their discovery by Cameo's Larry Blackmon while performing at Disney World. Some musicians from the group had worked as well with guitarist/singer/producer Anthony Lockett before he joined Cameo. Mantra toured and appeared on tv (Soul Train) with Cameo.
