Little Roy Wiggins

Real name: Ivan Leroy Wiggins

Effective period / Period of releases: 1962 - 1985

American country musician (steel guitar) and songwriter (born June 27, 1926, in Nashville, Tennessee – died August 3, 1999 in Sevierville, Tennessee)

Known for his distinctive "ting-a-ling" style of steel guitar playing, Wiggins began performing professionally at age 15, joining Paul Howard and his Arkansas Cotton Pickers. While playing with this band, he acquired his nickname "Little" both because of his young age and his small stature. In 1943, Wiggins briefly played with the Pee Wee King And His Golden West Cowboys. There, he met singer Eddie Arnold. When Arnold founded his own band, Wiggins went with him. For several years, his steel guitar playing lent Eddy Arnold And His Tennessee Plowboys their characteristic sound. After 1952, however, as Arnold moved to a more popular sound, Wiggins' guitar work was more and more moved into the background.

By the mid-1950s, Wiggins began recording solo for a multitude of labels, including Dot, but also many smaller ones, such as Starday Records. He last recorded with Arnold in 1961, but continued to tour with him until 1968.

As Roy Wiggins, Wiggins wrote many popular hits, most importantly "What, Where And When" (1950, with Cy Coben). Other songs include "Guilty Conscience" (also with Cy Coben), "Ting A Ling," "Wiggins Wiggle," "The Last Thing I Want To Know" (1959, with George Morgan (2) and [a=Vic McAlpin), "Love Theme" and "Thru The Night" (both 1962), "Steel Guitar Hula" (1965), and "Waikiki Wiggle" (1972).
