Fastest Land Animal is the side project of John Cusimano, founder and singer of NYC-based band The Cringe. He began work on FLA during the Covid-19 lockdowns in March of 2020. Cusimano began working with producer Don Gilmore on song arrangements over Zoom video calls. He filled out the band by recruiting fellow Cringe bandmate Jonny Blaze on guitars and bass and friend Andrew Meskin on drums.

The band developed alter-egos and their own backstory. For example, Cusimano's alter-ego is "Screamin' Jack Novak," who was born of a jackal and raised by his father, a nanny, and two irascible Rottweilers.
