Pétur Östlund
Pétur "Island" Östlund is a Swedish-Icelandic drummer and percussionist, born on December 3 1943 in New York City and primarily active in Sweden. Born of a Swedish-American father and Icelandic opera singer, María Markan (employed at Metropolitan Opera at the time), he arrived in Sweden in 1969. His Swedish nickname "Island", simply means "Iceland" in Swedish. Percussionist Sebastian Notini is his son.
He has played in various - mostly jazz - groups, but has also played with, for instance, Ralph Lundsten and Hans Alfredson & Tage Danielsson. He was also a drum teacher at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, Sweden, 1973-1992. In 2005-2019, he was a teacher at Musikhögskolan in Örebro, Sweden, a music academy. He has also written several text books on drumming.
