James Lipton

Real name: Louis James Lipton

American writer, lyricist, actor, and teacher.
Born September 19, 1926 · Detroit, Michigan, USA.
Died March 2, 2020 · Manhattan, New York City, New York, USA.
Married to actress Nina Foch (1954-1959, divorced).
He was dean emeritus of the Actors Studio Drama School at Pace University in New York City. He was the executive producer, writer, and host of the Bravo cable television series Inside the Actors Studio, which debuted in 1994.
In the 1960s-70s, he often collaborated with songwriters Cy Coleman & Laurence Rosenthal. He collaborated with Rosenthal on "Sherry", which became a hit for Marilyn Maye in 1967; The song hit #8 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart.
Lipton wrote the book and the lyrics for the Broadway musicals "Nowhere to Go But Up" (1962) and "Sherry!" (1967). ASCAP IPI# 18213121.
