'Samul' means 'four things', 'Nori' means 'to play'. SamulNori is a form of playing four Korean traditional percussions - k'kwaenggwari, janggu, buk, and jing-.
SamulNori originated from PungmulNori, a traditional Korean agricultural music. A genius k'kwaenggwari player, Kim Yong-bae (1952 ~ 1986), took the lead and first performed it in 1978.
Afterwards, a janggu player Kim Deok-soo took over and developed into the Kim Deok-soo Samulnori group.
