Biography

Amber & Silk Project
The Amber & Silk project brings together two distant musical cultures, providing an imaginative journey where itinerant musicians from China meet Polish troubadours on the ancient Silk Road. They sing and play together, learning one from another, exploring different ways of shaping emotions and considering the flow of time in music. The programme consists of traditional Chinese and Polish works, and Maria’s own compositions.
The two play ancient Polish fiddles (such as the suka biłgorajska and the fidel płocka fiddles) and Chinese zithers.
Maria Pomianowska is a professor of musical arts, multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, composer, instrument reconstructionist of forgotten instruments, and teacher. She is a professor at the Academy of Music in Kraków and the director of the Cross Culture International Festival. The number of instruments she performs includes a reconstructed suka biłgorajska and a fidel płocka. For thirthy years, Maria Pomianowska has performed concerts all around the world with artists such as Boris Grebenshchikov, Ram Narayan, Fazal Qureshi, Gil Goldstein, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, and Ian Gillan. She has often presented Polish music at Japan’s imperial court, and has released over 20 original albums.
