The formation of the Lost Gonzo dates to 1972, when Bob Livingston and Gary P. Nunn backed up Michael Martin Murphey on his album Geronimo's Cadillac. It was as Jerry Jeff Walker's backing band in 1973 that they adopted the name, The Lost Gonzo Band. The group split in 1979, with several members becoming the backing band for Ray Wylie Hubbard.

The group recorded and toured on their own from 1975-1979, returned with new albums in 1991 and 1995, and continues to play occasional live shows.
