Leading AIDS activist Michael Callen redefined the public’s concept of a person with AIDS after his diagnosis with the disease in 1982. By giving speeches, writing articles, appearing on national television, giving interviews, organizing within the community, campaigning, and singing at a tempo that would exhaust most healthy people.
