Gilles Bernard

Canadian pianist, keyboardist.
Between 1986 and 1988 he performed in France with the Senegalese-Quebec group Dadjé, in Dakar with the Senegalese National Orchestra and in Guadeloupe with the traditional group Kafé Ka Lévé. In 1993, he won the Prix de la Fondation Les Musiques du Monde at the Gala des Prix d'Excellence de la Culture in Quebec City. The following year, he toured the jazz festival across Canada with the Gilles Bernard Repertory Orchestra. He recorded seven albums including "Le Chapeau de ma Sœur" nominated for the 2001 Opus Prize and his album "Mot" ranked among the 10 best discs of 1999 in the newspaper Le Soleil. ART TV broadcast a full concert of his quartet recorded at Domaine Forget in 2001. In March 1999, the music of Gilles Bernard received special recognition to mark the opening of "la Maison du Québec" in Barcelona.
During his career he has accompanied internationally renowned musicians such as John Zorn (1985) and the famous Hungarian gypsy violinist Elek Bacsik (1991). In 1996 he spent four months in Milan, where he performed on several jazz stages. In 2002 he gave a concert in St-Pierre and Miquelon. Between 2001 and 2004, he wrote music for his quartet accompanied by a string quartet which was presented four times at the Théâtre du Petit Champlain and recorded by Radio Canada FM. In 2010 he participated in the Martinique Jazz Festival. In 2012 he took part in the concert "Les Grands Québécois du Jazz" presented at the Capitole de Québec with his quartet and as accompanist of singer Ranee Lee. In 2014 he presented his new quartet in double concert with the "Ellis Marsalis Quartet". In 2016 he released his album "4 Rue Durocher" in concert at the Montreal International Jazz Festival and in 2018 he released his album "Fréquence 119" in concert at the Quebec Summer Festival.
