Harry Harden
Real name: David Nunja Stoljarovič
Czech-Ukrainian-American band leader and composer.Born in 1901 in Mogilev, Ukraine.
Studied in Prague since 1922. Orchestra leader since 1929, he recorded hundreds of shellac sides for the Esta and Ultraphon labels.
Stoljarovič escaped from Germany in autumn of 1938, forced to leave his life savings of $25,000 to the Gestapo, finally finding refuge in America nine months later. There, he recorded for RCA and Decca.
He was often called "The Polka King" by music critics and fans. He presented polka music in a very modern manner, adding new instrumentation and arrangements. Instruments he was known to introduce included the oboe, flute, basson, xylophone and others, at that time used mostly in the symphonic field. He was a prolific composer, with over 400 songs to his credit. One of his best known was "Pick-Pick-Pick A Little Polka" (co-written with Mary Fryberg).
