Anglo-Irish writer and poet, born November 10, 1730 (disputed), Ireland; died April 4, 1774, London, England. He is best known for writing "The Vicar of Wakefield" (novel, 1766), "The Deserted Village" (pastoral poem, 1770), "The Good-Natur'd Man" (play, 1768) and "She Stoops to Conquer" (play, 1771).
