The Don Juans

Effective period / Period of releases: 1955 - 1984

Members: Andre Williams (2), James Drayton, Richard Lawrence (6), Lonnie Heard, Eddie Hurt, Charles Evans (3)

American rhythm & blues quintet whose stamping ground was the Detroit club circuit in the late 1950s. The band, dressed in 'Zorro' outfits complete with masks, would perform in one venue and reappear unmasked in another as "The Five Dollars" (The Five Dollars).

Most of their recording was done on the Fortune Records label, in the back room of Jack & Devora Brown's record store. Their line-up was Charles Evans (bass); James Drayton (lead baritone & tenor); Lonnie Heard (tenor & falsetto); Eddie Hurt (lead tenor); Richard Lawrence (baritone & tenor). After Richard Lawrence was drafted the group continued as a quartet. Members of the band were previously in Detroit circuit bands "The Shamrocks" and "The Del Torros", rubbing shoulders with the likes of "The Spaniels" and "The Tops" - who would later become "The Four Tops".

The line-up also backed performances by Andre Williams.
