René Arnell (aka René Veldsman) is a South African artist born in Cape Town. She started singing with various bands, including those of Hennie Bekker and Dollar Brand, while still in her teens. In 1974 she moved to Johannesburg and promptly became the supporting act to the Albert Hammond tour of South Africa. Following this she worked as a session musician before joining Dickory in 1975, with whom she recorded “Don’t Go”, which reached #5 on the French Hit Parade. In the same year she appeared in a celebrity concert with the likes of Ringo Starr, The Three Degrees and Dave Jones (formerly of The Monkees).
