Henry Berger
Real name: Heinrich August Wilhelm Berger
b. August 4, 1844; d.: October 14, 1929Became bandmaster of the Royal Hawaiian Band when Kaiser Wilhelm I "loaned" him to King David Kalakaua in 1872. However, he remained in Hawaii for the remainder of his life. Became fluent in the Hawaiian language and was the writer or co-writer for many Hawaiian songs, including what is Hawaii's state anthem, "Hawaii Ponoi" with music by Berger and lyrics by King David Kalakaua.
