Iolani Luahine
b. 1915; d. 1978.
Iolani Luahine was a legendary hula dancer. She was trained by her aunt Keahi Luahine. She taught, chanted, and danced. Among her students were George Naope and Frank Kawaikapuokalani Hewitt. Words can hardly describe the power of her dance. A good source for more information and to experience her art is Eddie Kamae's film, "Keepers of the Flame: The Cultural Legacy of Three Hawaiian Women," which also features Mary Kawena Pukui and Edith Kanaka‘ole.
