The genesis stems from the Long Beach art punk band SofaMusik which split to form Outer Circle (Steve Spit and Paul Santos) and Bubblegum Death (Steve Mac Donald, Tom Bailey and Craig Clark). Upon the demise of Bubblebum Death, Tom Bailey and Craig Clark formed Chorus of Souls, and recruited singer Jill Sparks, guitarist Chas Connors, and bassist Kenny Lefort.

Chorus of Souls in this form dissolved in 1992, and released one album in 1993. Many of the songs are featured in the animated feature films, The Kustomonsters Movie (2015) and Kustomonsters 2 (2019) directed by Craig Clark. A new Chorus of Souls album is due as a soundtrack release for the Kustomonsters 2 movie in 2019.
