Dave Plaehn was born and raised in Iowa. Both his parents were singers and he played in a high school band covering The Rolling Stones, Jimmy Henrix, Bob Dylan and more.

He then moved to Oregon in the mid 1980's, joining Neal Gladstone & Company. He started performing with slide guitarist Jeff Hino as a duo in 1990. They went on to release the mostly acoustic blues CD Dave Plaehn, Jeff Hino - On Your Bond in 1996. In 2002, they released "Can't Get My Rest" which is a mix of acoustic and electric blues. They continue to perform in the Plaehn-Hino Blues Band.
