Soviet physicist, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1991; Academy of Sciences of the USSR since 1953), president of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1975-86), three times Hero of Socialist Labor (1954, 1960, 1973). Member of the CPSU since 1961. The deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR 5-6 (1958-1966) and 10-11 (1979-1989) convocations from Moscow.
