Peter Vogel

Effective period / Period of releases: 2013

For over four decades, pioneering sound artist Peter Vogel has been making electronic audio sculptures and staging performances that respond and encourage viewers to discover patterns through repeated interaction. Utilizing various electrical components such as sound generators, transistors, switches, amplifiers, loudspeakers, and photocells, Vogel manages to interweave the randomness of observer-dependent reactions with determinate functioning memory to create a complex responsive network. In this series of works, photocells detect the shadows of participants, which trigger sound or light. The reaction of the work is dependent upon the movement of the viewer as the character or behavior of the work changes accordingly.

Peter Vogel was equally passionate about composing and improvising electronic music in the basement studio of his house. From musique concrète to minimal music to atmospheric collages he experimented mostly independent of his sound installations. There is a considerable collection of tapes in the archive of Peter Vogel Heritage.
