American guitarist, born in Chicago, Illinois, USA, and grew up and lives in North Carolina. Sawyer plays jazz primarily, and has recorded with Nnenna Freelon, John Abercrombie, Charlie Byrd, David Murray, Bob Cranshaw, Dave Finucane, and others. He studied briefly with guitarist John Scofield in the mid-1980s, and his playing reflects the influences of Scofield, Bill Frisell, Pat Metheny, Jim Hall, along with influences from jazz players who played instruments other than guitar. Sawyer has released straight-ahead post-bop albums (Two Sides, In the Stream, Night Visions, Change of Scene, Night Songs) and albums in the jam band jazz genre (Go There).
