Jungle Brothers

Real name: Nathaniel Hall, Michael Small & Sammy Burwell

Effective period / Period of releases: 1987 - 2021

Members: Michael Small (2), Nathaniel Hall, Sammy Burwell, Colin Julius Bobb

Jungle Brothers were formed through the high school friendship of Nathaniel "Afrika Baby Bam" Hall and Michael "Mike G." Small. Mike brought family friend DJ Sammy B into the mix, and the Jungle Brothers were born. Members: Nathaniel Hall, Michael Small, and Sammy Burwell embraced a range of styles -- including house music, Afrocentric philosophy, James Brown, and the use of jazz samples, as one of the original but most underrated members of the loose collective of 'alternative' rap artists known as the Native Tongues Posse, formed by hip-hop legend Afrika Bambaataa, which included Queen Latifah, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, and later Monie Love and Black Sheep. The group's far-out yet most successful single was "I'll House You," collaborating with house producer Todd Terry in an early experiment in what later became hip-house.
