Samba Diabare Samb
Real name: Samba Diabaré Samb
Samba Diabaré Samb passed away September 21, 2019 at the of 95. He was the dean of Senegalese artists.In 1962, with fellow artist Amadou Ndiaye Samb, they created the "Ensemble lyrique traditionnel du Théâtre Sorano de Dakar".
He was a xalam virtuoso, a stringed luth-like instrument from Senegal. In 2006 he was recognized as "Living Human Treasure" by the UNESCO U.N. agency
Born in 1924 into a family of griots, Samba Diabaré Samb co-hosted a successful program on the history and cultural heritage of Senegal on the eve of independence in 1960.
As a griot himself, a genealogist, a social chronicler, a historian and a poet, he has been known for his contributions to the valorization and popularization of Senegalese lyrical and classical music
