Biography

Labani Kalunga
Effective period / Period of releases: 1984
Zambian singer and guitarist known for playing Kalindula. Originally from Ndola, Labani Kalunga was discovered in the early 1980's by Zambia Music Parlour (ZMP) and released several hit singles with them. He was the founder of Amantanki Band which was made up of former Blackfoot members who also had played under the ZMP label. In the early 90s with the failure of ZMP and other record companies due to rampant piracy, Kalunga retired to Kapiri in 1993, still playing music to make a living. He suffered further misfortune when rampaging soldiers burned down his house. The fire destroyed his instruments, effectively ending his career. In his later life, he often played backing guitar for his friend and folk singer Andy Chola. Labani Kalunga passed away in December of 2015.
