A flamboyant figure, he enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame as a "face" of the swinging sixties (most notably as presenter of the BBC chat show "Dee Time"), but his inclination to clash with his employers and authority in general ensured that his demise and return to obscurity thereafter was equally swift.
