American violinist (June 20, 1920 in Stockholm - February 24, 1998 Freeport, Maine)
Born in Sweden to Russian parents, he began studying the violin at age 4 with Ivan Galamian and Jacques Thibaud. He made his recital debut in Paris in 1929 and in New York in 1937. In 1942, still a Swedish subject, he volunteered to fight for America in World War II. He retired from performing in 1967 and became a teacher at the Juilliard School, the Curtis Institute, the Meadowmount School of Music and the University of Michigan.
